Rotterdam Street Update and Pending Change to Windom Street Traffic Pattern: July 2021

With the utility work on Rotterdam Street finishing up, neighbors can expect to see the roadway fully open to traffic by mid-August.

Once Rotterdam is open, the new Boston Transportation Department (BTD)-approved traffic pattern will go into effect on Windom Street, turning the section of Windom between Hopedale and Amboy Streets into a one-way road in the direction of Cambridge Street.

This new traffic pattern will reduce the number of vehicles using Windom Street as a cut through to Western Ave. It will also help ensure large trucks are not accessing Harvard’s Science and Engineering Center via Windom Street.

Rotterdam Street Closure/February - June 2021

Rotterdam Street has been closed to vehicles since early February 2021.

It was determined after careful review that this closure offered the best and least disruptive work plan to complete the North Allston Storm Drain Extension Project (NASDEP) preparatory work and allow two contractors to complete their necessary construction activities on Rotterdam Street in the shortest amount of time. The road will remain closed pending some necessary work by our utility providers.

With Rotterdam Street closed to vehicles:

  • There is no through access for vehicles via Rotterdam Street to either Western Ave or Cambridge Street. Police details and variable message boards are in place to provide guidance.
  • Windom Street is closed to all but local vehicular traffic. All other vehicles on Cambridge Street seeking access to Western Ave are directed via signage to N. Harvard Street.
  • Bicycles and pedestrians are being accommodated down Rotterdam (see the orange dotted line on the attached map) and signage and police details help them safely navigate around the work area.
  • 28 Travis Street and 92 Seattle Street is accessible from Western Ave via Academic Way South.
  • Hague Street is open to construction vehicles and those needing access to 114 Western Ave and the parking lot at 2 Hague Street (SORO Lot). Both the 114 Western Ave and 2 Hague (SORO) parking lots are fully accessible.
  • Deliveries to the SEC Loading Dock will arrive via Academic Way South to Science Drive. They exit the area via Science Drive to Academic Way South back to Western Ave.
