Newell Boathouse Renovation Project – Phase One


Please be advised that Harvard University’s Faculty of Arts & Sciences (FAS) has engaged a contractor to perform a multi-phase renovation of the Newell Boathouse located on Soldiers Field Road. Phase one scope of work involves the removal of the of the Row Tank Building, the non-functional 1960s building addition on the upstream side of the boathouse.

Subsequent phases will include interior and exterior boathouse renovations, site and landscaping improvements, replacement of the dock structures, installation of two boat storage sheds, and accessibility upgrades, with full project completion scheduled for February 2024.

Project Schedule:
• Phase one is scheduled to begin during the week of Monday, June 13, 2022, and is targeting a late July 2022 completion. There will be no construction on site from September to November 2022.
• Project work hours are Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
• The contractor will adhere to the City of Cambridge’s noise ordinance and will not perform work before 7:00 a.m. or after 6:00 p.m.
• Some Saturday work may be necessary between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.

Neighborhood Impacts:
• Fencing with scrim will be erected around the Row Tank Building, including behind the building along the river.
• The pedestrian and bicycle pathway along Soldiers Field Road in front on the boathouse will be maintained throughout the project. Signage will be posted to ensure safety.
• During project hours, the work will generate some noise due to the presence of work crews and the use of construction equipment needed to remove the building and debris.

Traffic Management:
• Signage will be posted on Soldiers Field Road before the boathouse alerting drivers that construction vehicles are entering the road up ahead.
• Construction vehicles and deliveries will enter and exit the boathouse site off Soldiers Field Road. Deliveries will be restricted to 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. to minimize inconvenience during rush hour.
• Truck routes will be enforced to keep construction vehicles out of the neighborhoods.
• Parking will not be permitted on the work site, excluding any designated emergency vehicles.
