William James Hall Plaza Renovation Work Begins on January 6, 2024

As part of the Harvard University’s Faculty of Arts and Sciences campus construction activities, contractors are set to commence a multi-phase renovation project of the plaza that surrounds William James Hall at 33 Kirkland Street. Early mobilization will take place in late December including site preparation, fencing set up, and signage placement, with construction beginning on January 6, 2025.

The scope of this project includes replacing the original waterproofing underneath the plaza pavers, installing new pavers, making sustainable landscape improvements, and improving building accessibility to and from Kirkland Street.

Project Schedule

  • The contractor will begin setting up the work zone and fence line around the building in late December and construction will start on January 6.
  • The renovation project is targeting an April 2026 completion date.
  • Project work hours will be Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Some Saturday work between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. may be necessary

Community Impacts

  • Pedestrian access into William James Hall via the front entrance and access along Kirkland Street will be maintained throughout this work. Some pedestrian paths may be detoured at times. Signage will be in place to provide guidance.
  • Neighbors can anticipate that the work between 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. will generate some perceptible noise due to the construction equipment necessary to perform this renovation work, including trucks, excavators, and power tools, particularly during paver removal on the plaza.
  • Please note that all work will be performed outdoors within the site fence.
  • This project will take place in several phases. During each phase, some sections of the work area will be tented to protect them from the elements.
  • All construction vehicles and project-related deliveries will be arriving by way of Divinity Ave.
  • Trash and debris will be maintained within the site fencing and will be disposed of promptly.
  • The contractor’s site office, storage, material laydown area, dumpster, and portable bathrooms will be positioned in the building’s back parking lot.
