Project Information
Contractors have completed multi-phase utility relocation work in and around the Littauer Center parking lot. Work began in October 2024, and was finished by June 2025.
The scope of this work consisted of site preparation, excavation, and utility work in preparation for future development on the site.
Project Schedule
- The contractor began setting up the work zone and fence line on October 2024.
- Project work hours were Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Some Saturday work between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. may be necessary. Advance notice was provided for any Saturday work.
- The contractor created temporary construction vehicle access off Cambridge Street between the Littauer Center and Gannett House to facilitate truck access to the site.
- The site/landscape work and utility relocation work between October and April took place in sequenced phases from west to east, and the work site fencing shifted along with the workflow. The parking area was fenced for construction equipment and materials.
Community Impacts
- The Littauer Center parking lot was permanently closed for parking starting on October 4, 2024.
- All construction vehicles and project-related deliveries arrived off Cambridge Street.
- Pedestrian access and access to all adjacent buildings was maintained throughout this work. Some pedestrian paths were detoured at times. Signage was in place to provide guidance. Police details were on site as needed to assist with vehicular, bicycle, and pedestrian traffic.
- Loud construction activity paused during abutter-identified “quiet days” such as reading hours, exam days, and music performances.
- In addition to the presence of work crews in and around the Littauer lot, neighboring buildings did notice some perceptible noise due to the construction equipment necessary to perform this utility enabling work, including trucks, excavators, and power tools.
- Excavated areas were plated after work hours.
- Historic markers and existing fencing and trees in the area were being protected during this work.
- The project ensured that a pest control program is in place and patrols will be performed regularly.
- Trash and debris was maintained within the site fencing and will be disposed of promptly.
