Littauer Center Parking Lot Utility Relocation Work

Project Information

Contractors have started multi-phase utility relocation work in and around the Littauer Center parking lot. Early mobilization activities for the utility work began on Tuesday, October 8, 2024, including work site set up, fencing installation, and signage placement.

The scope of this work consists of site preparation, excavation, and utility work. The project is targeted for completion in April 2025, with utility work happening until February followed by site restoration and landscaping through April.

Project Schedule

  • The contractor began setting up the work zone and fence line on October 8.
  • Project work hours are Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Some Saturday work between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. may be necessary. Advance notice will be provided for any Saturday work.
  • The contractor has created temporary construction vehicle access off Cambridge Street between the Littauer Center and Gannett House to facilitate truck access to the site.
  • The site/landscape work and utility relocation work between October and April is occurring in sequenced phases from west to east, and the work site fencing will shift along with the workflow. The parking area has been fenced for construction equipment and materials.

Community Impacts

  • The Littauer Center parking lot was permanently closed for parking starting on October 4, 2024. Service vehicles and deliveries supporting the surrounding buildings are still permitted at the east end of the lot (closest to the Music Building Courtyard).
  • All construction vehicles and project-related deliveries are arriving off Cambridge Street.
  • Pedestrian access and access to all adjacent buildings will be maintained throughout this work. Some pedestrian paths may be detoured at times. Signage will be in place to provide guidance. Police details will be on site as needed to assist with vehicular, bicycle, and pedestrian traffic.
  • Loud construction activity will pause during abutter-identified “quiet days” such as reading hours, exam days, and music performances.
  • Please note that all work will be performed outside. Work crews needing access to basement utilities will provide ample notification.
  • In addition to the presence of work crews in and around the Littauer lot, neighboring buildings can anticipate that the work between 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. will generate some perceptible noise due to the construction equipment necessary to perform this utility enabling work, including trucks, excavators, and power tools.
  • Excavated areas will be plated after work hours.
  • Historic markers and existing fencing and trees in the area are being protected during this work.
  • The project will ensure that a pest control program is in place and patrols will be performed regularly.
  • Trash and debris will be maintained within the site fencing and will be disposed of promptly.
