Harvard Law School (HLS) has hired a contractor to perform some much-needed mechanical upgrades to Hastings Hall. The work is scheduled to begin on Tuesday, May 30, 2023, and project completion is scheduled for December 2023.
The scope of the project includes full removal and replacement of the building’s mechanical, heating systems, HVAC equipment and associated piping on all levels.
General Project Information & Community Impacts
- Standard project work hours are Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Some Saturday work may be necessary starting at 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.
- Fencing will be erected around the perimeter of Hastings Hall for the duration of the project beginning on Tuesday, May 30.
- The pathway between Epworth Church/Mass Ave will need to be closed periodically as needed. Access to the church will remain available during construction.
- A concrete truck will be positioned in the middle of Lewis Hall’s circular driveway for one to two days during the month of July.
- Hemenway Gym will be fully accessible throughout the project. The pathway from Mass Ave between the gym and Hastings Hall will remain open for the duration of the work.
- Trucks making deliveries to the project and picking up project trash/debris will do so from Oxford Street and will use laydown and debris/trash collection space that has been reserved in the parking lot behind Austin Hall.
- Materials and trash/debris will be walked back and forth to Hastings Hall via a pushcart from this location. This path will be marked with cones and ropes ensuring that pedestrian traffic will be able to safely navigate around the area. Signage will be in place to provide guidance.
- In addition to the presence of work crews, the HLS community can anticipate that the work will generate some minor noise due to the construction equipment necessary to perform mechanical upgrades to the building.
