Newell Boathouse

The second and final phase of renovation during the week of Monday, April 3, 2023.

Phase one involved the removal of the of the Row Tank Building, the non-functional 1960s building addition, that was located on the upstream side of the boathouse, which was finished last summer. This final phase included interior and exterior boathouse renovations, site and landscaping improvements, replacement of the dock structures, installation of two boat storage sheds, and accessibility upgrades.

Project Schedule:

  • Full project completion is targeted for February 2024.
  • Project work hours are Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
  • The contractor will adhere to the City of Cambridge’s noise ordinance and will not perform work before 7:00 a.m. or after 6:00 p.m.
  • Some Saturday work may be necessary between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.

Neighborhood Impacts:

  • Fencing with scrim has been erected around the boathouse, including behind the building along the river.
  • The pedestrian and bicycle pathway along Soldiers Field Road in front of the boathouse will be maintained and accessible throughout the project.
  • During project hours, the work will generate some noise due to the presence of work crews and the use of construction equipment, including a crane on land and marine equipment barges on the river to support the new dock construction.

Traffic Management:

  • Signage is posted on Soldiers Field Road before the boathouse alerting drivers that construction vehicles are entering the road up ahead and noting to use caution.
  • Signage is also in place on Soldiers Field Road to provide guidance to pedestrians and cyclists to ensure their safety during construction.
  • Truck routes will be enforced to keep construction vehicles out of the neighborhoods.
  • Parking is not be permitted on the work site, excluding any designated emergency vehicles.
