175 North Harvard Street Project Construction Impacts Update

The contractor started dismantling the building on Thursday, November 2, and this work is expected to take approximately four weeks. Materials are being sorted and trucked away from the job site. Due to the nature of the work and the equipment needed, noise can be expected during regular work hours between 7:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.

Electrical work in the Ivy Lane sidewalk is complete and restoration is underway. The sidewalk will be reopened by the end of next week. Some areas will remain coned off in preparation for paver installation.

Subsurface drainage installation will continue on South Campus Drive. A section of South Campus Drive has been temporarily diverted to allow for this utility work. This diversion has modified vehicular traffic routes and pedestrian crossings and will be in place for approximately one month. The contractor is targeting to have South Campus Drive re-opened by December 1.

Due to the weight and size of a piece of equipment arriving on site next week, the City requires that it be delivered off-hours so not to disrupt traffic on City streets. As a result, this equipment will be arriving on the job site at 2:00 a.m. on Monday morning, November 13. Once the equipment arrives on site, it will be turned off and the contractor will wait to unload it and set it up until standard work hours begin at 7:00 a.m.

Project enabling activities will continue in November and through January followed by the anticipated start of building construction.

As previously noted, enabling activities will include pile driving and vibrating sheet piles into the ground in preparation for building construction. These types of activities do generate noise and may also generate some perceptible vibrations.

Materials will be arriving throughout next week to support the start of pile driving, which is scheduled to begin on Friday, November 17. This work will be monitored for noise and vibration and is expected to last about five days.

The project has positioned dust, noise, and vibration monitors around the work site, and they are continually checked by third-party engineers to ensure construction activities remain within safe and acceptable levels. In addition, the contractor is working to minimize the noise impact of the project’s construction activities, including, where feasible, choosing construction techniques that produce less noise.

Piping installation work will start in late November. Anticipated completion is late December 2023.

Regular work hours are Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. Some work on Saturdays may be necessary as permitted by the City of Boston also from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
