Week of April 1, 2024

175 North Harvard Street Project Construction Impacts Update

The following is an overview of the work taking place at the 175 North Harvard Street construction site at the future location of the new Harvard University affiliate housing building at 100 South Campus Drive.

  • The contractor will be assembling and installing a tower crane for two long shifts
on Saturday, March 30, and Monday, April 1, from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. The
base and footings of the tower crane have been installed as part of the building
    foundation.
  • As noted in last week’s update, due to some unforeseen conditions, a temporary
road closure of both lanes of South Campus Drive near the McCurdy Track will be
necessary to accommodate the equipment needed to address these conditions.
This closure is scheduled for Wednesday, April 3, through Friday, April 5 from
    7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
All work will occur during normal working hours and will
    include signage to redirect traffic.
  • The contractor will be driving piles on Wednesday, April 3, through Friday, April 5. Please note this work does generate noise and some vibration.
  • Concrete pours continue throughout the week. Because concrete pours cannot be
stopped mid-pour, some of these operations may occasionally go later than 6:00
p.m. The contractor will make every effort to minimize this.
  • Crews will be installing reinforcing steel to prepare for placing concrete for the
foundation mat slab in early April.
  • Mat slab placement is tentatively scheduled on Saturday, April 6. This activity
is weather dependent with a backup date planned for Monday, April 8. This work
will potentially require extended work hours to complete. Two concrete pumps will
arrive on site at 6:00 a.m. to be prepared for a 7:00 a.m. start time with work until
7:00 p.m. Police details will be on site to assist with truck traffic.
  • Truck traffic in and out of the site will remain steady during standard work hours.
Some trucks will be staged at the parking lot located at 201 Western Ave as
needed during busier times to ensure trucks are not staging on the roadways.
  • Wheel washing and street sweeping continues to ensure soil is not being tracked
    through the streets.
  • Installation of below grade waterproofing work is in progress.
Installation of mud mat slabs are in progress.
  • Construction has started on the new American Repertory Theater (ART), which will be located at
the front of the 175 North Harvard parcel with the new Harvard University affiliate housing building
    already under construction behind it.
  • On the ART work site, crews continue excavating soil and exporting the soil offsite. Concrete
pours and waterproofing operations will begin the week of April 8.
  • A traffic change has been implemented on South Campus Drive to help improve safety and traffic
flow around the job site. Only construction vehicles are permitted to turn onto South Campus
Drive from North Harvard Street. All other vehicles will be directed to access South Campus Drive
    from Western Ave.
  • The project’s regular work hours are Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. Work on
Saturdays may be necessary as permitted by the City of Boston from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
  • The contractor will be working on site this Saturday, March 30, and Saturday, April 6.
