Week of April 8, 2024

175 North Harvard Street Project Construction Impacts Update

The following is an overview of the work taking place at the 175 North Harvard Street construction site at the future location of the new Harvard University affiliate housing building at 100 South Campus Drive.

  • The tower crane was successfully installed last week. At the end of each shift, the crane will be
left in weathervane mode with safety lighting turned inward.
  • The contractor is excavating in preparation for the new building’s foundation.
  • A temporary road closure of both lanes of South Campus Drive near the McCurdy Track is in place
to accommodate the equipment required to address some unforeseen conditions.
o Due to weather-related delays, this closure was moved to Friday, April 5, through
    Monday, April 8 from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m
. All work will occur during normal working
hours and will include signage to redirect traffic. All bike paths and sidewalks will be
    accessible during this work.
  • The contractor will be driving piles on Friday, April 5, through Monday, April 8. Please note this
work does generate noise and some vibration. The contractor will not be working on Sunday.
  • Concrete pours continue throughout the week. Because concrete pours cannot be stopped midpour, some of these operations may need to go beyond regular work hours. The contractor will
make every effort to minimize this.
  • Installation of mud mat slabs will continue.
  • Due to weather delays, the mat slab placement that was scheduled for Saturday has been
moved to Tuesday morning, April 9.

o Because this placement is quite large and once started, it cannot stop before completion,
this work will require extended work hours to complete.
o Concrete pumps will arrive on site at 3:00 a.m. on Tuesday morning to begin this work
with completion scheduled for 10:00 p.m. on Tuesday night. Police details will be on
site to assist with truck traffic.

o To be considerate of the neighborhood, the contractor has requested that backup alarms
be disabled, however, not all vehicles entering the site may be able to accommodate this
request. The contractor will make every effort to mitigate noise and vibrations.
o The project team appreciates the neighborhood’s understanding and will work to keep
early morning work to a minimum.
  • Truck traffic in and out of the site will remain steady during standard work hours.
  • Wheel washing and street sweeping continues to ensure soil is not being tracked through the
    streets.
  • Installation of below grade waterproofing work continues.
  • The contractor will be working on Saturday, April 6.
  • On the new American Repertory Theater (ART), work site, crews continue excavating soil and
exporting the soil offsite. Concrete pours and waterproofing operations will begin the week of
    April 8.
  • On South Campus Drive to help improve safety and traffic flow around the job site, only
construction vehicles are permitted to turn onto South Campus Drive from North Harvard Street.
All other vehicles will be directed to access South Campus Drive from Western Ave.
  • The project’s regular work hours are Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. Work on
Saturdays may be necessary as permitted by the City of Boston from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
